Sizing a child the Frog way!
Here at Frog we take sizing a child very seriously. This is one of the most important factors for cycling success and enjoyment.
Unlike many kids' bikes, Frog bikes are sized based on leg length rather than age, since this is the most reliable way to find the right size bike for each child. Children are unique and come in all shapes and sizes, growing at different times, so age alone isn’t a reliable measure.
FIND YOUR FIT
In many cases, wheel size and age are used as methods to select a child's bike, but this is not accurate; you need to measure the inseam of the child's legs. This will ensure that your child is able to place their feet on the ground safely and comfortably.
We recommend taking the time to measure the rider’s inside leg by following these simple steps:
- Stand the child in socks against a wall
- Place a small book between their legs, as high as is comfortable
- Ask the child to move away and measure from the top of the book to the floor
- Once you have measured the inside leg, use the table below to find the right size of bike for your child

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I CONSIDER?
Standover height and saddle height should also be factored into finding the right size bike for your child. This will ensure that your child can stand comfortably over the top tube (cross bar) of the bike and be able to touch the ground when seated on the bike allowing them to stop and start without toppling off.
FIND THE RIGHT BIKE
We recommend purchasing your Frog bike from your local Frog stockist, who will build the bike for you and ensure it fits your child properly.
Your local Frog Bikes stockist will have many of our bikes available for the rider to sit on in-store. You will get help and advice on sizing, and receive ongoing service, as well as support. PLEASE NOTE we always recommend that you buy your Frog bike from your local Frog store, who will build it for you and ensure the fit is right for your child. Our bikes should always be built and checked by a qualified mechanic.
How to fit a kids’ bike helmet
If your child has a love of cycling, a bike helmet should be a standard piece of equipment for their two-wheeled adventures.
The helmet plays an important role in protecting their head if they happen to fall off the bike. Whether they are toddlers or teenagers, new to cycling, or cycling experts, a helmet should be their number one kit item on EVERY bike ride!

How to teach kids about bike brakes with Bikeability
Teaching a child to ride a bicycle not only provides them with a lifelong skill but also inspires confidence and independence while having a whole lot of fun! One of the most valuable and essential cycling lessons you can teach a child is speed control. As exhilarating as it is to roll down hills and race friends to the park, teaching a child how to use their brakes properly will enable them to slow down and come to a controlled stop when needed.

How to explain bike gears to a child
With your child now a master of bike handling and balance, the next step forward is to teach them about bike gears. Having this knowledge will help them to maintain a comfortable speed whilst pedalling, depending on the terrain and gradient.
Having bike gears is not an indication of how fast the bike will go, but about the efficiency of the bike in different situations. Switching gears can make light work of hills, rough terrain and even descents, and knowing when to switch up or down a gear will make cycling for your child much easier.
